At Maplehurst Outdoor Living, we love tackling challenging landscapes and turning them into beautiful, functional outdoor spaces. Our recent lakefront project was no exception. This homeowner wanted to control waterflow, expand usable space, and create a seamless transition from their upper patio down to the dock. With a thoughtful approach and a combination of natural elements, we delivered a solution that not only looks stunning but also serves a crucial function.
Managing Waterflow with a Natural Look
Water management was a top priority for this project. Behind the existing brick wall and wooded area, we graded the terrain to handle water runoff from behind the house. To ensure proper drainage and prevent erosion, we installed a dry creek bed leading to the lake, incorporating medium-sized boulders to create a natural waterfall effect. This approach not only solved a functional issue but also enhanced the aesthetic appeal of the property.
Reinforcing the Shoreline
The existing riprap stone was removed and sorted with our skeleton bucket to eliminate excess dirt. We reused some of the stone to reinforce the shoreline, while the remainder was strategically placed between the homeowner’s yard and their neighbor’s for a clean, finished look. A filter fabric was laid down for stability, and we placed new rip rap along the shoreline and hillside to provide durability and a sleek appearance.
Maximizing Usable Space
The homeowner had an underutilized area between their back concrete patio and the riprap hillside. With an elevation change making the space difficult to navigate, we implemented a solution—a small yet effective retaining wall. The wall was backfilled with clean stone, creating a level surface perfect for additional landscaping or seating. To further enhance the space, we graded the area between the new wall and the existing patio with clean topsoil and finished it with lush sod.
Seamless Access from the House to the Dock
A major challenge was improving access from the upper patio down to the dock. To achieve a smooth and natural transition, we installed a set of gently curved stone steps, carefully arranged for both function and beauty. These steps, set on a solid stone footing and separated from the soil with geotextile fabric, provided a durable and attractive walkway. Each step offered a comfortable and stable surface for walking.
To complement the steps, we integrated large natural stone boulders to retain soil and add a visually appealing, organic touch. Around the steps, we used riprap stone to further stabilize the area and protect against erosion. Our team took care with the boulder and stone placement to ensure both functionality and a natural, seamless look.
Adding the Final Touches
At the base of the steps, we built a paver landing with an arching apron that leads smoothly to the existing concrete patio. This thoughtful detail tied everything together, making movement between the house, patio, and dock effortless. If additional safety features are needed in the future, we designed the steps with the flexibility to accommodate a railing—either core-drilled posts or a wooden post with marine rope for a rustic lakefront feel.
A Functional and Beautiful Outdoor Retreat
This project was all about blending function with beauty. By addressing waterflow concerns, reinforcing the shoreline, and creating a smooth connection from the house to the dock, we transformed this lakefront property into a more usable, visually appealing space. The end result? A landscape that not only meets the homeowner’s needs but also enhances their enjoyment of their stunning lakeside setting.
